The Swedish classification system

The classification system is based on a 1-5 star rating of the hotels. The system's criteria and structure correspond closely to those of the Danish system, which has been in use since 1997. The Swedish/Danish system is also used in Iceland, Greenland and on the island of Åland.
The Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have decided, in partnership with Denmark and Sweden, to establish a number of common criteria per star.
The Swedish system is voluntary.
Every classified hotel will bear a blue sign with a yellow "H" and the number of stars awarded.

The criteria

There are a total of around 130 Swedish criteria and they apply both to public areas and to the actual hotel rooms. In principle, the lowest standard shall determine the classification. The criteria shall reflect the Swedish hotel market's development and customers' requirements. The criteria are subject to annual review (see also the Classification Committee).
Examples of the requirements for the various star ratings:

For one star: communal toilet and bath/shower facility for every ten rooms, washbasin with hot and cold running water in the room, central heating, breakfast, round the clock admittance. Maintenance standard appropriate to number of stars.

For two stars: at least 40% of the rooms must have en-suite toilets and bath/shower facilities. Refreshments available for purchase. Maintenance standard appropriate to number of stars.

For three stars: en-suite toilet and bathroom, telephone and TV in all guest rooms, access to guest PC, hotel staffed during daytime, lift, and no-smoking rooms. Maintenance standard appropriate to number of stars.

To qualify for four stars, the hotel must have an ā la carte restaurant (not valid if the hotel is classified as Garni), minibar/room service, hotel staffed 24 hours a day, international TV channels, all guest rooms must have an internet connection, the hotel must offer photocopying facilities and laundry service, and furnishings must meet certain comfort requirements. Maintenance standard appropriate to number of stars.

The maximum rating of five stars is awarded to hotels with a pool and/or staffed gym, and/or staffed sauna with relaxation area, air conditioning. Safety deposit box in all guest rooms. Generally exclusive fittings and furnishings, suites. Maintenance standard appropriate to number of stars.
